Royal visit and Bridget Jones actor for European midwifery conference in London

Midwives at a European midwifery conference are set to welcome a royal visitor this week, along with British actress Sally Philips, known for her roles in the Bridget Jones films and TV series Smack the Pony.

The 5th European Midwives Association (EMA) International Education Conference takes place later this week on 2nd and 3rd of December in London. Midwives from across Europe and beyond will be attending the tri-annual conference which this year is hosted by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM).

HRH The Princess Royal, Patron of the RCM, will visit the conference on its first day, to deliver a short speech and to meet the delegates. Sally Phillips will also address delegates at the conference dinner on Friday evening at the Reform Club, relating anecdotes about her acting career.

The conference aims to improve the care women and babies receive through discussion of the key issues in midwifery education. The conference will be highlighting innovations in midwifery education, practice and regulation from across Europe.

  • Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent – Head of Maternity, Children and Young People, NHS England
  • Professor Mary Renfrew  - Professor of Mother & Infant Health, University of Dundee
  • Rebecca Schiller – Chief Executive, Birthrights
  • Jackie Smith - Chief Executive and Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council

 

Carmel Lloyd, Head of Education at the Royal College of Midwives, said: “It is a great honour not only to have the Princess Royal but also someone as high profile as Sally Philips contributing to the conference.  This is a significant and major midwifery conference and one that puts a spotlight on the importance of education and research in midwifery.

“It is research and evidence based care that leads to improved services and outcomes for mothers and babies.  Education underpins everything that midwives and student midwives do and ensures we are all using the best available evidence to deliver the best possible care to mothers, babies and their families.
