Royal visit for European midwifery conference in London

Midwives at a European midwifery conference are set to welcome a royal visitor in December. The European Midwives Association (EMA) International Education Conference takes place in December in London, and will be visited by HRH The Princess Royal on the first day of the conference on 2nd December.
Midwives from across Europe and beyond will be attending the tri-annual conference hosted by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM). HRH Princess Anne is Patron of the RCM. The conference is on the 2nd and 3rd of December 2016.
This is the 5th EMA International Education Conference which takes place every three years in a different European city.
The conference aims to improve the care women and babies receive through discussion of the key issues in midwifery education. The conference will be highlighting innovations in midwifery education, practice and regulation from across Europe.
Speakers include:
- Professor Cathy Warwick CBE - Chief Executive, Royal College of Midwives – Innovation in midwifery practice: findings from the UK maternity reviews
- Professor Mary Renfrew - Professor of Mother & Infant Health, University of Dundee – The Lancet Series, Midwifery
- Professor Cecily Begley – Chair of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin – Challenges in midwifery practice: the OptiBIRTH project
- Jackie Smith - Chief Executive and Registrar, The Nursing and Midwifery Council - Rethinking regulation: the role of regulators in improving quality – minimum standards or raising the bar?
- Elizabeth Prochaska - Lawyer, Matrix Chambers – Protecting human rights, dignity in childbirth
- Professor Soo Downe – Professor in Midwifery Studies, University of Central Lancashire – Midwifery education: ensuring safety and quality for 21st century midwifery practice across the EU
Carmel Lloyd, Head of Education at the Royal College of Midwives, said: “This is a real honour for the RCM and the EMA to have such a distinguished royal visitor. It highlights the importance of this conference to midwives in the UK, in Europe and indeed globally.
“Education underpins everything that midwives do and ensures we are all using the best available evidence to deliver the best possible care to mothers, babies and their families.
