Kent midwife heads to Bangladesh on RCM midwifery project

A midwife from Kent is traveling to Bangladesh as a volunteer in a Royal College of Midwives (RCM) project to support midwifery in Bangladesh. Áine Alam is a midwife at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust and received a prestigious Fellowship from the RCM earlier this year.

The RCM project in Bangladesh twins the RCM with Bangladesh’s midwifery association. It aims to strengthen the Bangladesh Midwifery Society, the country’s midwifery association. 

The project aims to strengthen the midwifery profession and raise the profile of midwifery services and care in Bangladesh.  This pilot project is initially for 1 year from June 2017 with potential to extend for a further 3 years.

Áine will be offering advice and support to the Bangladesh Midwifery Society to set up their working systems, to prepare for an election of officers in March 2018 and support the development of a new membership database. She leaves for Bangladesh in early December and will spend three weeks in the country.

Áine said: “I am looking forward to working with and supporting my midwifery colleagues in Bangladesh. They will I am sure also have a lot to teach me. It is one of the great aspects of these projects is that the support and learning is two way.”

About the RCM’s Bangladesh Project - The RCM has received funding from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), funded by DFID, to implement part of a major project called 'Strengthening the National Midwifery Programme', supporting the Bangladesh Government's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to produce competent midwives. The programme will improve the quality of midwifery education and create an enabling environment for the provision of a midwifery-led continuum of care for pregnant women and their babies. UNFPA invited The Royal College of Midwives UK to contribute to one aspect of this programme ('National capacity for professionalising midwifery increased') through the development of a partnership between the RCM and the Bangladesh Midwifery Society (BMS).

The project is funded by the United Nations Population Fund in Bangladesh (UNFPA Bangladesh) and the UK Department for International Development (DFID) in association with the Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery (DGNM), and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Government of Bangladesh.
