Cathy Warwick has today (13 January) announced that she will retire as RCM chief executive (CEO) this year.

At the end of August Cathy, who has led the RCM for over eight years, will step down as she turns 65.

Since taking up the post in 2008, Cathy has played a central role in positioning the RCM as an influential organisation.

Most recently, she made a significant contribution to the government’s Better Birthsmaternity transformation programme in England.

An RCM statement said: ‘She has consistently championed real choice for women about how and where they give birth, and the need for high-quality and safe services for women, babies and their families.’

As the organisation now begins its search for a new chief executive, Cathy will work alongside it with the board and staff team to support a smooth transition for her replacement.

Cathy said: ‘I have absolutely loved my time at the RCM. It has been a privilege to work with all of our wonderful members and to do everything we can together to ensure women and their babies get the best possible care.

‘The RCM is a great organisation and I will be very sad when I leave. I feel very sure that the next CEO will take the RCM on to even better things.'

Midwives' editor Emma Godfrey-Edwards said on the announcement: 'Cathy has worked tirelessly over the years with and for members to enhance and promote the profession, with the emphasis on quality care for women and their babies at the forefront of her mind.

'She is an incredibly passionate and knowledgeable woman and she has continually demonstrated this during her tenure. I know she will be sorely missed, but I wish her all the best for her retirement. I look forward to welcoming and working with the new chief executive in August.'
