The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) have today launched their latest online i-learn learning module for midwives, maternity support workers (MSWs) and student midwives developed in partnership with Birthrights, the human rights in childbirth charity.
The i-learn course; Human Rights and Maternity Care which is now available to all RCM members and is the latest module in a series of over 80 developed by the RCM’s education team.
The resource has been launched to coincide with the new model and framework of supervision for midwives in England A-EQUIP which comes into practice from April 1st.
The Human Rights and Maternity Care module includes learning focused on core human rights principles surrounding maternity care, legal obligations and tools and the positive effect human rights can have on midwives and a woman’s personal experience of pregnancy and childbirth.
The RCM i-learn courses provide learning at all levels and range from 10 minute updates through to more in-depth learning. They modules are supported by video and audio resources as well case studies and upon completion RCM members receive a certificate.
Upcoming i-learn modules currently being developed by the RCM Education team include; Promoting Compassionate and Supportive Workplaces, Home Birth and Delivering Difficult News in Pregnancy.
Commenting Gail Johnson Professional Education Advisor at The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) says; “The RCM works tirelessly to support the continued education and professional development of midwives, maternity support workers and student midwives. Since launching the i-folio and i-learn series in 2014 we have developed over 80 i-learn courses.
These online courses are available for free to all RCM members and are a fantastic learning resource. The e-learning platform itself also enables our members to record all their professional development as they complete individual modules in their own time.”
“We are delighted to have worked closely with Birthrights in developing our latest i-learn module. The new module also provides practical examples that will illustrate the powerful role that human rights can have to improve personalised maternity care for women.”
Commenting Birthrights CEO, Rebecca Schiller said: “With the launch of A-EQUIP planning complex care will not longer be down to a specialist. Therefore all midwives and maternity workers need to understand how human rights law can empower them to advocate for women, and to plan individualised care. This i-learn module created by the RCM in collaboration with Birthrights is an important contribution to further training midwives for this role."
