RCM comments on breastfeeding and bonding research

By RCM on 30 October 2017 Breastfeeding Bonding

Research on links between breastfeeding and the bonding benefits has been published today by the American Psychological Association. Commenting on the research, Clare Livingstone, Professional Policy Advisor at the Royal College of Midwives, said: “There are many ways for mothers and babies to bond.

Breastfeeding is one of the many ways through which this this can be achieved and this also includes activities such as playing, holding and talking. There is certainly more research needed to understand more about how breastfeeding contributes to bonding.

“What must be also be stressed are the many proven health benefits of breastfeeding for the mother and baby and we need to ensure that mothers are supported to breastfeed. This is particularly important in the postnatal period and we know that more investment is needed in this area to ensure mothers get that support.”
