RCM’s multidisciplinary programme for safer care nominated for award

The RCM’s education team who developed the pilot programme have been nominated in the category for ‘Improving Outcomes through Learning and Development’.
The Labour Ward Leaders Programme was developed following work initiated by the asphyxia working group of ATAIN (avoiding term admission into neonatal units).
The programme itself was designed and delivered collaboratively by the RCM, The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) and the patient safety team at NHS Improvement with funding from Health Education England (HEE) and ATAIN.
The labour leaders programme is delivered as a one-day interactive workshop and is aimed at multidisciplinary maternity teams. Initially a pilot programme with four programmes was made available to labour ward teams from September to December 2016. Eight teams with equal representation of midwives and doctors (primarily obstetricians) attended each workshop. This totalled 32 Trusts and 245 labour ward leaders.

The RCM’s education team has worked really hard in collaboration with our colleagues at NHSI and the RCOG to produce and deliver this outstanding one day programme.
“The one day workshop is interactive and aims to enables multidisciplinary teams to reflect upon the culture in which their service provision occurs and explore the diverse contributions that each member can make to the success of the team.
The workshop also requires each team to initiate a quality improvement project which addresses safety on the labour ward. A follow up evaluation event supported by HEE enabled the teams to showcase their project and share good practice amongst their colleagues and peers.

This achievement reflects the ongoing collaborative work being undertaken by our two Colleges. The RCOG has worked closely with the RCM to design and plan the leadership training programme with the ultimate aim of developing leadership capability with a focus on improved safety in maternity care. It is vital that we work together to address current challenges in maternity services to ensure women receive the best possible care.”
