A Shrewsbury & Telford midwife who turned a local branch into a flourishing community has been rewarded with a national award. Rebeccah Davies, who works at the Shrewsbury & Telford NHS Trust, has been named as the Gabby Dowds-Quinn Members Champion at this year’s Royal College of Midwives (RCM) annual awards.

Gill Walton, Chief Executive of the RCM, said:

“The Members’ Champion award is hugely important because it gets right to the heart of RCM membership: colleagues supporting each other. This year’s award is particularly poignant as it is made in the name of one of our own colleagues, herself a passionate fighter for RCM values, who we sadly lost earlier this year. Rebeccah Davies embodies that same spirit, working hard for fellow midwives and maternity support workers (MSWs) and leading by example.”

Rebeccah received the award, which is sponsored by Thompsons Solicitors, in a virtual ceremony on International Day of the Midwife( IDM) tThe fellow midwives and MSWs who nominated her called her a positive role model who has the respect of those around her. She led work to negotiate enhanced contracts for MSWs and secured an important u-turn from the Trust on support for community midwives.

Stephen Cavalier, Chief Executive of Thompsons Solicitors, said: “Thompsons Solicitors is proud to again be associated with the RCM Awards, particularly at a time that midwives all over the UK have been seeking to support and maintain normality for new mothers in such challenging circumstances.

“Representatives such as Rebeccah, fighting for the rights of their colleagues at a local level, epitomise what the trade union movement is all about. We’re pleased to play a part in her being recognised for her hard work with this award.”
