Female genital mutilation a one day workshop and deinfibulation skills a half day workshop

All midwives are required to have the knowledge and skills to care for a woman with FGM as part of the professional standards of practice and behaviour for midwives, set out in the Code (NMC, 2015). In addition midwives should be able to carry out deinfibulation for a woman who presents during labour with an intact Type 3 FGM. This training also covers the extended role of the midwife in providing care for non-pregnant women with FGM who require the expert knowledge and skills obtained by an experienced clinician.

Pre-requisites for the course:

  • Minimum of one year post-qualification as a midwife
  • Perineal suturing certificate
  • Evidence of perineal suturing competency
  • Certificates to demonstrate completion of the Health Education England FGM e-learning modules
