RCM i-learn has a range of online learning modules designed to support members’ continuous professional development (CPD)
i-learn is easy to use and provides around-the-clock access to online learning. You can enrol on as many modules as you wish and work through them when and where you like.
There are over 120 RCM i-learn modules with more being developed all the time: from 10-minute tasters that can be taken in your coffee break to packages of courses, such as Leadership or Examination of the Newborn. Courses feature interactive activities, animation, video, audio, activities and quizzes to help reinforce your learning. Case studies and reflective activities are also included and you are encouraged to use i-learn alongside i-folio, your e-portfolio, making notes in preparation for revalidation or career development opportunities.

Professional practice:
UK reports into maternal mortality have repeatedly noted that failure to recognise deterioration is a key factor in maternal death. This module is aimed at MSWs but will be useful for students and others interested in developing their skills in recognising a woman that may be deteriorating in the clinical area or community setting.
Human factors is about understanding human limitations and designing the workplace to allow for variations in humans and human performance. Knowing how factors such as communication and stress affect health professionals helps us understand predisposing characteristics that may be associated with adverse events and errors.
Whilst midwives care for a number of women with long term conditions, many may not be aware of exactly how many have hEDS/HSD, disorders affecting connective tissue throughout the body. The development of this brief module was led by researchers at Coventry University to summarise how hEDS/HSD affects those childbearing and how midwives can better support them in maternity services.
Career development:
The RCM now has a package of leadership development resources for all maternity staff. This includes a series of short modules on i-learn on topics such as Coaching, Promoting learning, Strategic thinking, Promoting the profession and Developing the vision.
The RCM Career Framework is about exploring options and expanding horizons and prospects. It is organised into four areas: Education, Clinical practice, Management and Research and outlines the knowledge, skills and qualifications you will need to develop to progress in your chosen direction.
Activists:
The RCM Network of MSW advocates provides a voice for maternity support workers (MSWs) in their workplace, regionally and nationally. This module gives you an understanding of the role of the MSW advocate and how the role works within the local branch and the wider RCM, as well as the support provided.
i-folio
RCM i-folio is a personal e-portfolio where you can easily store useful documents and the certificates from completed i-learn modules, conferences and workshops. The i-folio journal provides an excellent way of keeping a record of your reflective practice. It is a private space but a web page resource enables you to display elements of your portfolio to selected people, ideal for students or revalidation.
